Food: What’s for breakfast? Dinner? Lunch? Or maybe you could write a poem about that time you met a friend at a cafe.

The gentle rain fills the air around us, almost mist like in its quality. We find ourselves sheltering under a modern building, the aluminium facade out of place in this run down part of the city. We had been walking for hours, explorers on a mission, our destination nowhere to be found. Our stomachs rumble, grateful for the lunch we’ve brought with us. Carefully, I start to unwrap our bounty, the results of Operation Oeuf.

I can’t help but laugh at my anxiety earlier that morning, furtively glancing around the breakfast room as I’d lowered the eggs into the water bath. Worrying that if caught, I’d be made to eat all six eggs for breakfast. Rushing back to my seat, I’d wrapped them in serviettes as quickly as possible, praying that I wouldn’t get caught.

The anxiety had been worth it, the eggs are the tastiest we’ve ever eaten…is it because they were poached from the breakfast room, or were we so hungry and tired from our journey that anything would have tasted amazing? We would never know. But Operation Oeuf…was a success!

Author Note: A very happy memory from my trip to Brussels with Joe. It was my birthday and we were looking for the Museum of Natural Sciences as it has Europe’s largest exhibition on dinosaurs! We had been walking for hours but it was well worth the journey, a fantastic museum…and Operation Oeuf really was a success!
