The Vessel: Write about a ship or other vehicle that can take you somewhere different from where you are now.
Passengers board first, hours before departure. Front row seats for the show.
Buses and vans arrive from far away towns, precariously packed with their goods and wares. No health and safety here. We watch in awe as men carry refrigerators on their backs, crates of vegetables so high they cannot see, but each item then lovingly placed, an intricate jigsaw puzzle of their livelihoods. Every inch of space is used, the decks slowly filling below us, a barricade, trapping us on board.
Hours pass, below the burning sun we sit and watch the spectacle unfold before us, more buses, more vans, each loaded higher than before. Yet still they continue to find room for everything, the vessel magically creating the space it needs to fit everything on board, nothing is left behind, all has a place in the new country which awaits.
